How to Get Rid of Acid Reflux: Natural Remedies for Heartburn in Easy Steps

Are you one of the 60 million people who suffer from GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease)? Because it is a painful condition, there is no doubt you, like so many others who suffer, would like to know how to get rid of acid reflux.

Acid reflux or heartburn happens when the stomach acids from the food we eat flow from the stomach back up into the esophagus. Naturally, most people’s first defense against acid reflux is to take an antacid or medication for indigestion to ease their symptoms. The trouble is, antacid tablets or liquid are not on the list of natural remedies for heartburn.  Why?

Because antacids can only offer temporary relief. In fact, they only mask the symptoms of GERD. Meanwhile, the acid is still doing its damage to the esophagus. Acid reflux actually burns the lining of the esophagus, much like a sunburn and, over time, can lead to cancer.

So, you’re probably wondering, how do I get rid of acid reflux naturally?

A good first step is recognizing certain foods you should avoid, particularly right before bed when your body’s reclining position relaxes the angle at which your esophagus meets your stomach. These foods include spicy foods, greasy foods, highly acidic foods and foods that have heavy caffeine, sugar or fat.  Some likely culprits are:

Pizza or spaghetti sauce Chocolate Peppers Onions Garlic Greasy foods Coffee and other caffeine drinks

Conversely, there are foods we can eat that help prevent acid reflux, such as broccoli and other green vegetables, apples, and whole grain breads.  Try drinking an 8 ounce glass of water with 2 to 3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar mixed in before each meal and bedtime. Apple cider vinegar is a part of the natural remedy for heartburn.

You might try chewing gum as it releases saliva which in turn washes the food down, dilutes the acid and helps your intestines to function better.

One of the best ways to avoid acid reflux is to close your kitchen at 8:00 p.m.

Let’s not overlook the adverse effects of smoking. Studies have shown that those who smoke regularly are 70% more vulnerable to GERD than those who do not smoke. No natural remedies for heartburn will work well unless you first quit smoking.

Eating frequent but smaller meals, sleeping on a slight incline (so the stomach is not higher than the base of the esophagus), and wearing clothing that does not bind at the waist are additional suggestions to help get rid of acid reflux.

It is possible to totally cure yourself of GERD by following a simple natural program. Thousands all over the world have successfully done just that. You can read their success stories in the article (and related material) entitled: “The Best Cure for Acid Reflux.” This article is on our blog “About the Family,” and the link to it is below.
